The Rosebank Management District partnered with FNB Art Joburg for the first ever Open City weekend which took place at venues across Rosebank from October 28–31.

The four-day Open City programme was a celebration of Joburg’s rich art scene, bringing major new exhibitions into pop-up spaces and galleries across the Rosebank precinct, all of them free to visit. After a year of lockdown closures it was an exciting opportunity for Joburg to engage once again with local contemporary art while gallery hopping between more than a dozen different venues in Rosebank.

Participating venues included Rosebank’s top contemporary art galleries such as Everard Read, Bkhz and Goodman Gallery to mention just a few. Special pop-up art events also took place at venues including the recently opened Radisson Red Rosebank hotel and the most-loved lifestyle destination, The Zone @Rosebank.

Here are some highlights…

A major pop-up exhibition “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt” curated by Anelisa Mangcu and Jana Terblanche hosted at Keyes Art Mile explored Black Portraiture in the practice of painters from Southern and West Africa. The exhibition has been extended until November 13.

The Zone@Rosebank hosted a pop-up documentary photography exhibition titled Of blood, sweat and data. Co-curated by Studio Nxumalo and Through the Lens Collective the photography exhibition focused on the city of Joburg, its people and dynamic social structure.

Oxford Parks and The Radisson Red Rosebank hotel were home to several Open City exhibitions including pop-ups by Bag Factory, Artist Proof Studios, Kalashnikovv Gallery and Bubblegum gallery.

Everard Read and Circa galleries hosted guided walkabouts of their latest exhibitions led by top contemporary artists Lady Skollie and Nandipha Mntambo.
